Digital Skills for Older Individuals in Today's Society

Published on 13 September 2023 at 18:30

There are many older individuals who struggle to keep up with technology and feel left behind in today’s ever demanding world of Digital Skills. I refer to these as the “forgotten generation” as I.T. has evolved so quickly and everything has moved online.  It is important for society as a whole to recognise the value and importance of digital literacy and to encourage and support people of all ages in developing these skills.

Technology has the power to connect us and enrich our lives, regardless of age. By working to bridge this divide and empower everyone to navigate the digital world, we can create a more inclusive and connected society for everyone.

There are several reasons why individuals of all ages especially senior citizens should learn digital literacy:

  1. Communication

Learning computers and digital skills enable senior citizens to communicate and connect through various means, such as email, video calls, social media, and messaging apps. This helps them stay in touch with friends, family and communities.

  1. Access to Information

The internet provides a vast amount of information on various subjects, including health, news, hobbies and so much more. Being competent at using a laptop, tablet or smartphone allows older individuals to research and access information that can enrich their lives and help them stay informed.

  1. Independence

Digital competency can enhance the independence of everyone by allowing them to perform various tasks online, such as banking, shopping, booking appointments and accessing government services. This reduces their reliance on others and empowers them to manage their own affairs efficiently.

  1. Cognitive Stimulation

Learning computers and digital skills can provide mental stimulation and keep older individuals mentally sharp. It challenges them to learn new concepts, problem-solving skills and adapt to evolving technologies which can improve cognitive functions and overall mental well-being.

  1. Social Engagement

Many community groups, organisations and social activities are now conducted online. People can easily participate in these activities and engage with others who share similar interests, helping to combat social isolation and loneliness.

  1. Job Opportunities

Some older individuals may want or need to continue working. Acquiring computer literacy can open up employment or volunteering opportunities which in turn can boost social interaction.

  1. Confidence and Empowerment

Being proficient on computers and digital devices can boost one’s confidence by enabling them to overcome technological barriers. It provides a sense of empowerment having the ability to navigate and participate effectively in today's digital society and this is so important!

In conclusion, it is never too late for older individuals to learn computers and attain a digital skillset. Acquiring these abilities offers numerous benefits as outlined above but especially offering independence, social interaction, confidence, and empowerment.  When it comes to digital isolation and a “forgotten generation”, these skills are invaluable to them and us, as family and friends.
